“See yourself as dead to sin and fully alive to God because you are joined to Jesus.”
- Cleric's Paraphrase

1. Summary of the context
The apostle Paul is writing to people who are confused about God's grace. They have heard that God forgives us freely, and some wonder, “Then does it matter how we live?”
So Paul walks them through what happened when Jesus died at the cross. When that happened, something happened to you too. When Jesus rose from the dead, believer, you rose with Him. This is not first about your behavior. It is about your identity.
It is as if your old character, bound by a curse, died. A new character with a new alignment now stands in his/her place, actually adopted by the King Himself.
2. What this verse means
“See yourself as dead to sin” is not a command to try harder. It is an invitation to believe what is already true. You are not half alive and half stuck. You are not a hero constantly switching sides. You are fully alive in Christ. Your old self (the "flesh" of you) has been crucified and is dead.
Think of it like this. The enemy may still shout across the battlefield, but his authority over you is gone. His voice is noise, not command.
To be “alive to God” means you are connected to Him at your core. You are not waiting for life. You have it. You are not trying to get close to God. You already are.
this is key: you are not a sinner trying to become better. You are a new creation learning to live from who you already are.
3. What this verse does NOT mean
Young traveler, let us identify some common pitfalls that we may avoid where others have become ensnared.
This verse does not mean you will never struggle. Even the strongest adventurer still faces battles. The struggle exists, but it does not define you.
It does not mean you need to constantly remind God to forgive you. You are already fully forgiven because of Jesus.
And it definitely does not mean you are a "sinner saved by grace." Don't fall into that common trap. You are a Saint who sometimes sins. If a married woman walked around with her husband saying to people, "Well, I'm just a single girl who was lucky enough to have a wedding. Without him, I'm a single girl who would go around like a bachelorette." How would her husband respond? Probably with something like, "Why are you saying you are single? That's creepy and wrong. YOU ARE NOT SINGLE. YOU ARE MARRIED. Stop being creepy." It's the same with your spiritual state. You are absolutely no longer a sinner, you are dead to sin and alive to God. Don't be creepy about it.
4. Application
So how do you live this out on your journey?
Start with your identity. When you fail, do not say, “That is just who I am.” Instead say as this verse says, “That does not fit who I am anymore.”
Trust over striving. Growth is not about rolling higher effort checks. It is about trusting the life already in you. The Holy Spirit within you speaks truth, peace, and clarity. The enemy brings shame and confusion. Learn the difference.
Rest in your position. You are not climbing toward acceptance. You are living from it. The victory is not something you chase. It is something you carry. Walk in it. Fight from it. Rest in it.
